Five Tips for Building a Healthy Diet

There’s a lot of back and forth when it comes to nutrition. Some experts say one thing, while others say another. Fad diets cycle in and out of popularity, while food scientists continue concocting ever more sophisticated ways to tempt us into buying foods that may taste good, but don’t do us much good. When it comes to nutrition, it’s easy to get confused and overwhelmed. But much like our approach to physical fitness here at Framework Personal Training in Reno has stayed consistent since we opened our doors many years ago, so has our guidance on nutrition. Here are five tips for building a healthy diet.

Eat Vegetables

Leafy green vegetables are a wonderful source of vital nutrients, minerals and fiber. They should be part of your daily diet, at just about every meal. Go for variety – cooked, raw, with dressing, without. A good mix of vegetables is an important part of a healthy diet, so make a point of eating those greens.

Eat Berries

Eating fruit is a another great way to get vitamins, minerals and fibers. There’s some debate about the naturally-occurring sugars in some fruit, and whether that offsets the benefits. If sugar is an issue in your diet, opt for berries. Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are wonderfully high in antioxidants, nutritious, and delicious!

Eat Nuts

Incorporating nuts into your diet – moderately – is another way to get an influx of healthy unsaturated fats, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals. While nutrients will vary from nut to nuts, they’re all considered healthy. Opt for almonds, macadamia nuts, pecans, and walnuts, and reach for the plain kind. Those that have been seasoned and coated almost always have extra salt and sugar.

Eat Less Sugar

Added sugar is a big hurdle for many of us. Most processed food will have high amounts of added sugar, so cutting back there can be a good place to start. Start checking labels, and avoid foods with high levels of added sugar.

Drink More Water

Instead of sports drinks, fruit drinks, and sodas, water should be your beverage of choice. Not only is it important for hydration, we often mistake hunger for thirst. Make water your primary source of hydration during the day, and enjoy other drinks in moderation.

These are basic recommendations that align with just about every approach to diet and nutrition. Keep in mind that nutriton and consistent exercise are two sides of the same coin.
