Our Sedentary Lifestyles are Killing Us – But There’s a Cure
A study recently published in the journal JAMA Network had some startling findings about what not exercising is really doing to us. According to the study conclusions, leading a sedentary lifestyle is likely worse for your health than a smoking habit. What’s more, that kind of exercise-free existence is akin to having a serious disease. The good news? Exercise is the cure.
The Study
Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic studied 122,007 people between 1991 and 2014. Participants were tested on treadmills, with mortality rates later recorded. Strong links were established between those capable of higher levels of exercise and longer, healthier lives. But it’s the study’s conclusion about the inverse relationship between sedentary lifestyles and shorter lifespans that’s so striking. One of the study’s co-authors told CNN that poor fitness on a treadmill or in an exercise stress test is associated with a worse prognosis in terms of mortality than having hypertension, being diabetic, or having a smoking habit.
The report encouraged health care providers to promote the benefits of consistent exercise to their patients. And we are absolutely on board.
It’s not just that exercise will make you feel better, look better, sleep better, and live better, with more energy and a happier outlook. It’s that the alternative – not exercising – is so dire.
