The Brain Benefits of Going for a Run
Psychologists from the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne in France published their findings in the November issue of Acta Psychologica, concluding that a brief amount of moderate-intensity exercise can improve cognitive efficiency and elevate mood by boosting energy levels. Relaxing for the same timeframe doesn’t impact mood or the mind in the same way, because it doesn’t energize us. It’s an interesting study that assessed the cognitive abilities and self-described mood of each participant before and after running or relaxing. Movement boosted mood, which then improved cognitive performance. What’s more, relaxing during those 15 minutes actually resulted in noticeably decreased energy and overall mood, though researchers note more studies are needed to explore than link further.
